WaterNeuron thread asks to route nICP maturity to WTN stakers
A forum post from October 16, 2026 asks the WaterNeuron SNS to send the maturity that now boosts nICP yield to WTN stakers. No SNS proposal is linked yet. Apps that use nICP should not hard-code its yield and should watch the DAO's proposals.

On October 16, 2026, a community member posted a forum thread asking the WaterNeuron (WTN) SNS to send all maturity that now boosts nICP yield to WTN stakers instead, citing "zero dev activity for the last 6 months." The thread does not link a submitted SNS proposal yet, so WTN stakers, nICP holders and apps that hold or price nICP should watch the WaterNeuron proposal list and plan for a lower nICP yield.
What the thread proposes
The thread is titled "WTN SNS DISCUSSION - Proposal to change parameters of SNS". Forum user Arthur2 posted it on October 16, 2026 in the Developers category. It is a discussion post, not an on-chain proposal. The main claims are:
- The post calls WTN "the only SNS That Dfinity directly invested in" and says DFINITY "owns 20% of" it.
- The post says there has been "zero dev activity for the last 6 months" and "zero new major nicp clients or partnerships" in that time.
- It asks the DAO to restructure "the way that maturity is distributed from the 1060k ICP that WTN owns". That ICP sits in the protocol's 8-year neuron.
- The concrete request: while the dev team is "completely MIA", all maturity that now boosts nICP yield should go to WTN stakers. This would last until the developers return and do real work on the DAO.
- The author argues this does not hurt nICP stakers, because "nICP apy will always tend towards 2.3%". In this view, the change only gets nICP to that level faster.
Two replies came the same day. One user called the project dead. Another reminded the author that anyone can submit an SNS proposal: "Go on and submit it then." As of October 19, nobody has posted a link to a submitted proposal in the thread.
How WaterNeuron rewards work today
The WaterNeuron docs describe two NNS neurons. One has a 6-month dissolve delay and holds ICP from liquid stakers. The other has an 8-year dissolve delay and holds the ICP raised in the SNS swaps. The rewards page says that "90% will be staked in the 6-month neuron again benefiting the nICP holders", and the remaining 10% goes to SNS neurons in proportion to their stake.
The split has been discussed before. In 2025, a thread called "Aligning WaterNeuron Growth with Long-Term Decentralization Goals" proposed changing the share of 8-year neuron rewards given to nICP holders based on the protocol's total value locked (TVL), meaning the total ICP staked through WaterNeuron. Its constants were TVLmin = 2m ICP, TVLmax = 40m ICP, Cmin = 0.1 and Cmax = 1. A separate 2025 thread described SNS proposal 3555, a swap of 24M WTN for 365k ICP with DFINITY. It was expected to raise DFINITY's voting power in the DAO from 2% to about 24.9%. The live split may differ from the docs, so check it on-chain before relying on any number.
| Flow | Docs (current design) | Thread request |
|---|---|---|
| 8-year neuron maturity to nICP (6-month neuron) | 90% | 0% while devs are inactive |
| 8-year neuron maturity to WTN SNS neurons | 10% | 100% while devs are inactive |
| End condition | None stated | Until devs return and do "a good effort amount of work" |
| Status | Documented design | Forum discussion; no proposal linked |
Who is affected and why it matters
nICP holders. nICP's exchange rate against ICP rises as staking rewards build up. If the 8-year neuron's maturity stops going into the 6-month neuron, nICP gets only the rewards from its own stake. So the yield boost that came from the 8-year neuron would end. This is what the poster means when he says nICP yield will get to about 2.3% sooner.
WTN stakers. They would get all of the 8-year neuron's maturity instead of a 10% share. The poster wants this to make up for what he calls the "abysmally low APY" WTN stakers have earned so far.
Developers and DAOs that integrate nICP. DEX pools, lending markets and DAO treasuries that hold nICP depend on the yield and exchange-rate assumptions behind it. The nICP docs list it as an ICRC ledger token with a 0.0001 nICP transfer fee. The ledger itself would not change, but the rate at which nICP gains value against ICP would.
NNS governance. WaterNeuron votes on NNS proposals with its neurons, so changes to how it pays rewards matter beyond the DAO. The 2025 decentralization thread was started over concerns about WaterNeuron's share of NNS voting power.
What to do now
- Read the current reward design on the WaterNeuron docs rewards page. Then check the live split on-chain, because the 2025 dynamic-share idea may have changed the 90/10 split.
- Watch the Proposals tab of the WaterNeuron SNS on the ICP dashboard (SNS ID jmod6-4iaaa-aaaaq-aadkq-cai). A forum thread changes nothing until an SNS proposal is submitted and adopted.
- If you hold WTN, make sure your SNS neuron can vote, either directly or by following another neuron, so you can vote on any proposal that comes out of this thread.
- If your app shows an nICP APY, calculate it from the observed nICP/ICP exchange rate over time. Do not hard-code a fixed figure.
- If your protocol uses nICP as collateral or in a pool, test your models with a lower yield. The poster's 2.3% is his own claim, not a published protocol parameter.
- Post your position in the forum thread before any vote, especially if you integrate nICP and a sudden yield change would affect your users.
Caveats
The claims about developer inactivity, DFINITY's 20% stake and a 2.3% yield floor come from the forum post and have not been confirmed by WaterNeuron or DFINITY. No proposal is linked in the thread, and the request has no on-chain effect unless the WTN DAO adopts an SNS proposal.
