The .icp Question Has a Date: ICANN’s Reveal Day Turns Rumor Into a Verifiable Record

A developer-forum question about whether DFINITY applied for .icp remains unanswered—but ICANN has now set the date when the public record should provide the clearest evidence.

The question facing the Internet Computer community is no longer simply whether DFINITY applied for .icp. It is when that claim can be checked against an authoritative public record.

A 14 September thread on the Internet Computer Developer Forum asked whether DFINITY had submitted an application for .icp in ICANN’s 2026 new generic top-level domain round. The discussion connected a conventional .icp domain to the ICANN root, which is the path required for ordinary DNS resolvers to recognize the TLD without end-user changes. The thread did not produce a confirmation from DFINITY.

That uncertainty now has a deadline. ICANN says Reveal Day will take place on 7 October 2026 at 18:00 UTC. At that time, ICANN plans to publish the entities whose applications are proceeding, the applied-for strings, any relevant variants or replacement strings, contention sets, and public portions of the applications.

This is the useful distinction for builders: Reveal Day should answer whether an application associated with .icp appears in the official program record, but it will not mean that .icp has already been delegated or that the application has passed every later evaluation. ICANN’s published timeline places string confirmation on 17 November, followed by a public input and objections period.

ICANN reported that 1,663 applications were submitted and that 1,616 had received payment and would proceed in the round. It also warned that public claims about applicants or strings should be treated cautiously unless they come directly from ICANN. That warning applies directly to the forum speculation.

As of 30 September 2026, the forum thread still does not publicly confirm that DFINITY applied for .icp. The most defensible conclusion is therefore procedural rather than predictive: the community has a specific date and source to check, and should avoid treating hope, hints, or silence as evidence before ICANN publishes the record.
